Calleva originated as a well networked and defended Iron Age oppidum of ca . 38 ha towards the end of the first century bce . Two generations after the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 ce it was refounded as a Roman town, Calleva Atrebatum, ca. 85 ce , responsible for the administration of the civitas Atrebatum. Extensive antiquarian and modern excavations have revealed much of its town plan, including the remains of the amphitheatre, bath house, forum basilica, mansio, street grid, temples, town and artisanal houses. Its third century town walls enclosed 48.6 ha. It continued to flourish until the end of the Roman occupation of Britain, 410 ce .
