Until relatively recently the study of depression and of crime were independent endeavors. Though the relationship between depression and crime is not yet well understood, there is strong evidence of an association, and depressive symptoms are overrepresented among delinquent and offender populations. Depression and crime and delinquency has been viewed within the framework of a number of traditional criminological theories (e.g., social control, strain), as well as more circumscribed theories (e.g., failure theory, acting‐out theory) dealing specifically with the relationship between internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Gender, substance abuse, and mental health all play an important role in the current research on depression and crime and are likely to continue to do so. Future research on this topic will benefit from heightened reliance on longitudinal explorations aimed at further understanding timing and development.
