This chapter summarizes the main conclusions that arise from the data in the book particularly regarding the debate as to whether there was a ‘greening’ of the Irish establishment between 1879 and 1914. The colonial context is presented as one of the key factors in retarding ‘greening’. And the possibility that the ‘greening’ policy contained the seeds of its own destruction—by creating a unionist reaction—is also considered. Finally, the conclusion considers the implications of the data presented in the book to debates regarding the causes and origins of the Irish revolution (1916‐23) and suggests that the blocked mobility of educated young Catholics was a key factor in the rise of nationalism in early twentieth century Ireland.
