Navigation, the science of maritime way finding, was particularly challenging in the era before the compass. The safest conditions for sailing in antiquity were those which permitted the vessel to travel within sight of land. Voyages during the winter months, when stormy conditions were frequent and daylight hours short, were avoided if possible.
