City‐walls enclosed either the city proper (e.g., Athens) or the city and part of its hinterland. They consisted of a stone socle on which a mud‐brick superstructure rested (e.g., at Mantinea in Arcadia) or they were entirely built of stone (e.g., at Palairos in Akarnania).
