The maritime trade of the Early and Late Roman Empire was a combination of older characteristics, such as ship assembly and personnel, and elements particular to the Roman Empire, such as an increasing centralization of power and bureaucracy. Sea transportation was the easiest and most efficient means of moving goods, people, and ideas throughout the empire's vast territory. Despite the large corpus of archaeological, iconographic, epigraphic, and textual data, there are still debates over the fundamental nature of the movement itself.
