The development of high‐speed rail (HSR) has transformed economic landscapes worldwide. Studies of HSR and regional development mainly consider the wider socioeconomic impacts of HSR in three main fields: transport impacts (also known as travel effects); spatial and socioeconomic impacts; and environmental impacts. Transport impact refers to changes in accessibility and connectivity, in addition to modal substitution. Spatial and socioeconomic impact include changes in socioeconomic landscapes at intraregional and interregional scales due to the impact of HSR on the smooth flow of associated factors and the widening of markets of many kinds. Environmental impacts include effects on local air pollution, energy consumption and climate change, noise disturbances, and land occupation.
