The relationship between siblings is special due to its longevity and its rather egalitarian character, especially between the sexes. It was seen as an intimate and affectionate bond; although brotherly solidarity was tested due to laws of inheritance and competition for honors and offices, brothers were expected to cooperate. In Greece as well as in Rome, they cared for their sisters and their offspring and acted on behalf of the father as a sister's guardian. The sibling bond thus proved to be a positive model to shape other social relationships as well, most notably those between members of early Christian communities.
