Known especially for his pioneering analysis of liberal democracy and the dynamics of revolution, Alexis de Tocqueville also provided some important insights into slavery, racism, and colonialism. His two most famous books, Democracy in America (1835–40) and The Old Regime and the Revolution (1856), focused primarily on the origins and consequences of liberal democracy and of the forces that generate and sustain revolutionary change; but there are sections in his first masterpiece and among his extensive other writings that attempt to analyze the subjects of racism, racial slavery, conquest, colonialism, and ethnic stratification. While Tocqueville's travelling companion and fellow magistrate, Gustave de Beaumont, wrote more explicitly on American slavery in the 1830s, Tocqueville's assessments of the state of play on these questions anticipate many subsequent debates around them.
