Traditionally founded by Phoenicians led by the Tyrian Elissa, Vergil's Dido, as Qart‐Hadasht (New Town), the city was strategically placed on the North African coast to control Mediterranean maritime trade, a monopoly contested first by the Greeks, then by the Romans in the Punic wars (264–146 BCE ).
