Syrianus was head of the Athenian school of Neoplatonism from 432–7 ce . He is best known through the work of his student, Proclus. Syrianus’ greatest contribution to Platonist metaphysics is his multi‐layered cosmos. He describes a cosmos comprised of levels closely linked together, each one inhabited by a god or gods arranged in a series of triads. He also outlines a theory of the ideas, coordinating epistemology and ontology.
