Media ecology is an interdisciplinary field of study defined as the study of media as environments. Media ecology scholars utilize broader definitions of the key term “media” than scholars in other fields, encompassing any type of technology, and any language, code or mode of communication, information, perception, or expression, and are interested in the different biases of different media, their effects on individuals, society, and culture, and how they function as human environments. Media ecology scholars view media as playing a leading role in human history, and stress the need to understand media in a historical context.
