Difference, Diversity, Differentiation

This chapter suggests that black and white feminism should not be seen as essentially fixed oppositional categories but rather as historically contingent fields of contestation within discursive and material practices in a post-colonial society. It argues that analysis of the interconnections between racism, class, gender and sexuality must take account of the positionality of different racisms with respect to one another. The chapter underlines the importance of a macro-analysis that studies the inter-relationships between various forms of social differentiation empirically and historically, but without necessarily deriving them all from a single determining instance. It addresses the various notions of ‘difference’ that have emerged in recent discussions of how extensively the term ‘black’ can be used to define the experience of African-Caribbean and south Asian groups in post-war Britain. The chapter concludes with a brief examination of some conceptual categories used in the theorisation of ‘difference’.
