Proto‐rabbinic leader in mid‐first century Palestine, Hillel, usually called “the Elder,” and occasionally “the Babylonian,” is viewed by rabbinic sources as the founding father of the “school of Hillel” and as the central figure of late Second Temple period Judaism.
