A city in Middle Egypt (modern al‐Bahnasa), situated ca. 180 km south of Cairo and on the western bank of the Nile channel known as the Bahr Yusuf. It is the most prolific single source of Greek papyri, chiefly dating from the Roman and Late Antique periods (late first century BCE to seventh century CE ), and arguably the best‐documented provincial city of the Roman Empire.
