This chapter seeks to pluralize understandings of the state and trace these through four sections, each overlapping and intertwined. The first explores the imagined foundations of the state as a natural or organic expression of human territoriality. The second looks at the international nature of statehood through consideration of the state system. The third section examines how feminist, anthropological, and poststructural approaches to the state have reoriented attention away from formal state institutions and toward the more socially embedded processes through which ideas of the state are reproduced. The final section examines debates concerning the transformation of state sovereignty in the face of more global and networked forms of spatiality. After a brief on the waning state, the chapter highlights the urgent scholarly need to trace the ways in which state power is secured and reproduced, sovereignty is legitimized, and forms of oppression and exclusion that this can foster.
