As elsewhere in sub‐Saharan Africa, debates on ethnicity and nationalism are crucial both in the intellectual and political arenas. Cameroon is in this respect a striking case because the fight for political independence from 1945 to 1960 gave rise to severe ethnic and political clashes between those opposing and those in favor of independence. These conflicts were even provoked by the French and British former colonial administrators. Moreover, the reemergence of political ethnicity occurred after 1990 with the reestablishment of multiparty politics. This entry explores the historical and current developments in Cameroon as far as ethnicity and nationalism are concerned. First, a synopsis of ethnic relations, including the more than to 250 ethnic groupings, is outlined and second, the diverse role of nationalism is analyzed during precolonial, colonial, early postcolonial periods and in the present day.
