Aulus Hirtius (ca. 90–43 BCE ) was a staunch supporter of Caesar, one of the core group of the Caesarians whom Cicero called by the deictic isti (“those men”). He was also an author of some note. Hirtius' political career owed much to Caesar's patronage. He served as Caesar's legate in Gaul in the late 50s, and he later served with Caesar in Spain (49) and Antioch (47). He was praetor (46), governor in Gaul (45), and finally he was designated consul for the following year by Caesar in 44. During his consulship (43), Hirtius, along with his colleague C. Vibius Pansa and with young Octavian, raised Mark Antony's siege of Mutina. Hirtius died during this campaign.
