One of the leading sociologists of the twentieth century, Robert K. Merton made direct and indirect contributions to communication theory and research. A theoretical architect of functional and structural analysis, Merton published influential studies in the sociology of science, bureaucracy, media, communication, and culture. Together with his longtime colleague Paul Lazarsfeld, Merton laid foundations for communications research as a theoretically guided, methodologically rigorous, and empirically grounded social science. His analytically nuanced writings on communication bridge Anglo‐American and Continental social theory, situate social phenomena within their broader cultural and historical environments, and blend objectivist with cautiously critical sensibilities.
