Gender is the totality of socially constructed characteristics and behaviors associated with one's sex. Both men and women experience the effects of war and international violence, although in distinctly gendered ways. Women are highly vulnerable during war and in times of international violence. As a social category, women already experience marginalization during peacetime, and periods of armed conflict exacerbate their vulnerability. In addition, women occupy multiple and conflicting spaces within war and international conflict. They are simultaneously a highly present population and, due to their subordinate status, an invisible one. While women are the minority in terms of combatants, war strategists, and decision makers, they experience the most harm. Frequently the needs of women during armed conflict are overlooked or ignored.
