This chapter explores the mutual perceptions of Romans and Jews in the period of the Roman Republic and the first centuries of the Empire. It surveys a range of representations and constructs that each people framed of the other. The chapter examines various authors and texts on both sides that render generally unfavorable or hostile verdicts. It also asks the question of how far these statements and characterizations grow out of ethnic attitudes or constitute judgments on ethnicity. Analysis of the principal ancient testimony offers an interpretation different from the prevailing view of the role of ethnicity and the construct of identity in relations between Romans and Jews.
