Register and text types are complementary perspectives to the study of situational and linguistic profiles of text varieties. Registers are identified by their culturally recognizable characteristics, while text types are identified based on their shared co‐occurrence of linguistics or situational features. A typical register study starts from the description of the situational characteristics of the register investigated, followed by a comprehensive linguistic analysis. The final, and perhaps more important, stage of a register analysis is the functional interpretation, where the researcher interprets the findings of the linguistic analysis in light of the situational variation observed. In a text‐type approach, the researcher identifies shared situational or linguistic characteristics across a group of texts. Essentially, both approaches are used to describe the language of different text varieties. In this entry, we will offer an overview of the methods used in both approaches, the results of key studies taking these approaches, and the applications of studies that take a register or text‐type approach.
