Polycentricity is a concept designating an equilibrated urban system, in opposition to monocentricity. Polycentrism implies a more normative meaning: policies favoring more polycentricity. The term can be used at different scales, and the measures of polycentricity remain strongly dependent on the scales and territorial frameworks used. Even if the advantages of more polycentricity are empirically weakly founded, polycentrism is generally promoted by the planning and regional development authorities, in particular at a European level.
