Although chariot racing, sponsored by (rich) private individuals, was introduced into the Olympic Games at the twenty‐fifth Olympiad (680 BCE ), the circus factions ( factions ; Gk. Merē, dēmoi) were a Roman institution, originally comprising syndicates of rich men.
