Modern scholars have generally construed Cicero's remarks at De oratore 2.52–3 to mean that, while Publius Mucius Scaevola was pontifex maximus (130–115 BCE ), all the material accumulated in the pontiffs' archive since early times was reworked and consolidated into the Annales maximi , which, according to, comprised eighty books (the relevant passages of Cicero and Servius are both quoted in the entry pontifical chronicle ).
