Phylogeography and landscape genetics are both interdisciplinary fields that combine molecular genetic and geographical data to understand the evolutionary and ecological mechanisms that drive spatial distributions of biodiversity. The two fields overlap conceptually and in their application of geospatial and genetic tools, but differ in their spatial and temporal scales of focus. Phylogeographers investigate the genetic signatures of geographical contexts that are deep in time (e.g., Quaternary glaciation) and broad in spatial extent. In contrast, landscape geneticists focus on contemporary geographical contexts (e.g., land‐use change) at finer spatial scales. The two fields lie at the nexus of rapid advancements in biomolecular and geographical information science technologies, providing both challenges and opportunities for advancing interdisciplinary synthesis in biogeography.
