Born in Damascus, sophist and monk, pupil and friend of John Moschos, mentor of Maximus The Confessor, Sophronios (ca. 550–March 11, 638/9 CE ) led Chalcedonian opposition to Herakleios' monoenergist formula and was appointed patriarch of Jerusalem in 633/4.
