The ancient world has left illuminating, albeit incomplete, records of its athletes. Inscriptions, monuments, and texts document who participated and sometimes their career records and socioeconomic backgrounds. Not unlike modern societies, ancient cultures differed widely, even within themselves, regarding the appropriateness of the athletes’ regimen and the rewards and emoluments they receive.
