Throughout the whole of antiquity, the Greek philosophers have sought to explain the origin, structure, and observable processes of the spatio‐temporal universe. A key question to which they have given divergent answers is whether or not the universe as a whole or its various natural parts exhibit purpose and if so, whether or not such purpose is attributable to a transcendent rational entity or principle.
