Many of the texts of printed popular literature contain a strong historical dimension and present a variety of different conceptions of time. Mandrou emphasises the historical aspect of chivalric romance, which he calls ‘historical legend’, describing a mythical past, an origin legend of the early modern French state and of its ruling classes. Bollème and Capp have discussed the presentation of time in the annual almanacs which were among the most widely circulated printed items. These structured short-term time around the agricultural and commercial year, listing the dates of fairs and suggesting times for various farming activities such as sowing. In the longer term, they also embodied a version of history by giving anniversaries of historical events, usually events in the formation of the national states of France or England. 1 These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
