Ethnography is a form of qualitative research conducted from a philosophical position of cultural outlook and insider perspective. Understanding individual behavior, social relations, and social problems from stakeholders' viewpoints are essential goals. Accordingly, ethnography involves researcher immersion into study settings and interaction with subjects in their natural settings (“in‐situ”), as opposed to more sterile qualitative research approaches extracting data without attention to environment and group dynamics. Most ethnographers are social scientists, usually sociologists or anthropologists, with a preference for inductive knowledge production and a critical eye toward quantitative inquiry. The conduct of ethnographic research is often time‐consuming and the requirements of gaining access to study settings (entrée) and rapport development with study group members are sufficiently challenging, so that ethnographers represent a minority group among social scientists.
