Aeminium was one of the most important Roman cities in the northwestern part of the province of Lusitania. It is noted for harboring one of the best preserved cryptoportici of the Roman world. Under Claudius, the forum of this civitas capital was built over the cryptoporticus. The architecture of the forum was unusual, with two‐tiered porticoes, and the layout of a basilica with aedes Augusti .
