The area of social ecology and crime encompasses a wide swath of research within criminology that focuses on the association between place of crime, delinquency, and victimization. The approach applies both positivist and classical conceptions of offending and their relationship within urban settings. Historically, theoretical conceptions of social disorganization have driven the growth of social ecological perspectives. In more recent years neoclassical theories have applied social ecological research perspectives in relation to targeted crime prevention policies and programs. Currently, collective efficacy advocates draw from all these perspectives in their analyses of neighborhood‐level differentiation and its relation to criminal and noncriminal behavior.
