A skyscraper is a tall building with multiple floors. Originally developed to accommodate emerging corporations amid limited land space in late‐nineteenth‐century North America, skyscrapers are now found all over the world. Recently, a growing number of skyscrapers have been built in Asia, as the economies of nations such as China have grown in recent decades. As the world rapidly becomes more urban, skyscrapers will become an increasingly important building type. As their role deepens, the feats of innovation and engineering that have made skyscrapers ever taller and more spectacular may also be applied to evolve their contributions to urban vitality and environmental quality.
