Sociological approaches to translation use concepts and methods from the social sciences to further our understanding of translation as a socially embedded and social practice. It is a transdisciplinary field that developed at the overlaps of Translation Studies, Sociology, and Literary Studies. On the one hand, scholars following these approaches are interested in explaining social power relations influencing translation. On the other hand, they seek to illustrate how translation shapes social change in multilingual societies and a highly interconnected world. The conceptual, methodological, and empirical program developed as sociology of translation examines translation and interpreting as socially embedded activities that both shape and are shaped by the social construction of reality.
