Confidentiality is concerned with protecting the privacy of information about an individual. Information privacy is defined as the “claim of individuals, groups, or institutions to determine for themselves when, how, and to what extent information about them is communicated to others.” Location privacy is a special case of information privacy, concerned with the privacy of information about an individual's location. There are at least five different types of negative effects on individuals and society that are associated with a lack of information privacy. To combat these effects, two main classes of mechanisms exist for information privacy protection: regulation and information hiding technologies.
