Robert Agnew is an American sociologist best known for his work extending Emile Durkheim's work on anomie and Robert Merton's strain theory to explain crime and delinquency. His general strain theory attempts to explain why people commit crime and posits that negative events and relationships result in people feeling negative emotions. The strain of these negative emotions can lead to criminal coping as a way to deal with these strains. Agnew's work has focused on extending his general strain theory. Currently he is examining the impacts of climate change on crime through the lens of general strain theory.
