This entry discusses the concept of information structure and several fundamental principles of information structure that govern the ordering of units of information within a sentence or utterance (constituent order, information status, and syntactic weight/heaviness) as well as related concepts (topic, focus, emphasis, intensification, and contrast). It then explains and exemplifies how information structure interacts with grammar and how it is encoded in linguistic structure by means of focus constructions.
