The interview is one method applied linguists use to explore language‐related problems. Most interviews are carried out as conversations between people, including the researcher and a respondent whose beliefs, opinions, attitudes, and feelings are relevant to the language issues investigated. Interviews are typically used in exploratory and qualitative research to gather data about beliefs of individuals or groups, but different types of interviews are used for different purposes, including data collection in quantitative research.
