Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, as he was called after adoption by his maternal uncle, Gaius Plinius Secundus, probably in his will, was born in 61 or 62 CE (since he was seventeen when Vesuvius erupted in 79; Ep . 6.20.5), and both sides of his family belonged to the local aristocracy of Comum in northern Italy.
