The Old Persian word magu ‐ means “priest.” It is well attested in documentary texts from the Achaemenid period, but its use in Old Persian royal inscriptions is limited to one specific case: that of the “usurper” Gaumata, who claimed to be Bardiya, king of the Persians, and who was unmasked and defeated by Darius.
