Geomasking is the alteration of point locations in a spatial dataset with the dual goals of protecting privacy and providing a degree of utility for spatial analysis. Geomasking introduces deliberate error into coordinates to prevent identification of specific locations, households, or individuals represented in the dataset. The procedures aim to make it ethically possible to share discrete spatial data to wider audiences than is feasible with the typical fallback of aggregation to enumeration units or data suppression. Geomasking procedures thus aim to enable wider sharing of higher‐resolution data, which, while less accurate, will still enable some spatial analyses.
