This entry deals with the cities of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries since the collapse of socialism around 1990. With reference to the three decades since then, the entry describes, first, the conditions (institutions, public policies, and market players) of postsocialist development. This is followed by a discussion of the main development processes, analyzing the performance of the CEE cities. Special emphasis is given to the consequences and dynamics of urban transformation. Finally, there is an overview of the debates regarding the models and futures of postsocialist cities.
