The drive to make creative cities has become a global phenomenon in the twenty‐first century. Advocates claim that city‐shaping investment in the arts, entertainment, knowledge, and cultural economies, and in urban planning policies will attract members of the creative class and produce thriving places. Critics suggest that this trend is problematic: it privileges urban elites, encourages gentrification, and excludes lower‐income and working‐class people from the city.
