Ascalon is one of the oldest cities on the coast of the eastern Mediterranean. It was resettled, mainly by Phoenicians, in the late sixth century bce . During the Hellenistic period it rose to prominence, and became a Greek polis under the Seleucids. It was an important city of Greco‐Roman Syria, becoming a cultural center.
