Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained worldwide attention since the 1990s and are an important part of the Internet of Things (IoT). Sensing and wireless communication are two important components for both WSNs and the IoT. A WSN sensor node is a low‐power device equipped with multifunctional sensors, a processor, memory, power supply, radio, and actuators. A WSN system includes a server, a sensor node, communication protocols, and a database. The sensor network platform, communication protocols, and network services constitute major research subjects in WSNs. Major application areas of WSNs include environmental monitoring and target tracking; it is an important technology for networking field observations and development of integrated earth observation systems.
