Presents a study of three protracted conflicts in West Africa—the civil wars in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire—which yields important lessons on the dynamics of resilience against political violence and civil war in the subregion. The conflicts overlapped in many respects: all concerned power sharing and identity and all remained prolonged by access to minerals and natural resources. At the outset, all three proved linked to control of power and the grievances of marginalized sociocultural groups (a combination of ethnic, age, and regional exclusion). Although the conflict in Côte d’Ivoire lasted the longest, it remained much less bloody than the civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone, with the civilian population mostly spared, except in the last few months of the conflict, and the casualty count limited over the 12 years of war. The potential for reconciliation therefore proved greater than in Liberia or Sierra Leone.
