The name “Lateran” given to the fourth century basilica and later papal palace in the east of Rome refers to the consul whose property there, the aedes Lateranorum , was seized by the emperor Nero in the first century, and the aedes Laterani , a residence given by Septimius Severus to his general T. Sextus Lateranus.
