This chapter deals with constructions of foreign ethnicities in Roman thought and the Roman practice of contemplating ethnic differences through religious practice. It is shown that the term “religio” could be used to relate religious practices to ethnic or rather political units, thus acknowledging the existence of a geographical landscape of diverse religions rather than a local religious plurality. However, persons, practices, and bodies of knowledge were marked as non-Roman (Etruscan, Greek) within the framework of urban religion.
