We have now completed study of the attested associations of the classical period with respect to their relation to the central government and, in the light of that relation, to their place in the greater state of Athens. Our findings must stand or fall on their own to the extent that they are supported or not by the evidentiary record for the actual design and functioning of those associations. Nonetheless, any corroboration forthcoming from other sources would be most welcome. There is in fact one such source-contemporary Athenian political theory.
